there’s no such thing as a filmmaking talent
I've often heard people talk about "filmmaking talent" as if it's some singular, mysterious gift. But the more I create and reflect on my journey, the more I realise the truth: the real magic of making films and videos isn't about fitting a mould, but about breaking it. What I've learned is that there isn’t a specific filmmaking talent. Instead, it’s about the distinct individual standing behind the camera, shaping the story, and solving the inevitable challenges.
My Lens
I truly believe that every person possesses a unique blend of traits, attributes, and emotions. My perspective is distinct; I don’t possess the same attributes, personality traits, or emotions as another filmmaker. This isn't a limitation; it's the very foundation of compelling cinema. When I embrace my individual way of seeing the world, that distinct perspective becomes my most powerful tool.
For me, my unique gift is a keen interest in detail and providing information in the most engaging way possible. I see information not just as text or numbers on a screen.
““Information can be how a story is communicated. What’s in the frame of a shot? How does that affect your understanding of what you’re seeing?””
This approach transforms passive viewing into an active journey of discovery for the audience, proving that depth and engagement stem directly from a filmmaker's personal vision.
The Unseen, Shaping My point of view
If my unique perspective is the spark, then real-world experience is the forge. Filmmaking isn't a sterile, controlled environment; it's often a dynamic, unpredictable challenge that demands constant adaptation.
I remember one of my first long days filming on the job: a triathlon. It was such a full-on experience to have early on. The swimming, for example, led me to understand that filming from higher angles, where I was able to stand, and how the light hitting the water obscured my shots. The cycling was super fast-paced, and staying alert and on point meant the difference between getting the shot I wanted versus compromising with one that was just okay. And to compound it all, the weather that day was so up and down.
This demanding environment wasn't just a test of my skills; it actively shaped my creative eye. I truly feel I developed my eye for detail more from this than anything else I've done. My need to have as much information as possible before a job also stems directly from this experience. It's in these demanding situations that skills are forged and resilience is built.
Adaptability, Innovation, and Perseverance
Beyond the initial creative spark, certain attributes become indispensable. For me, it's a powerful combination of innovativeness paired with my creativity. This isn't just about coming up with ideas, but about actively seeking solutions to problems and always finding different angles I can approach things from. This is something I feel has always been part of myself. This proactive mindset is essential when facing the inevitable complexities of production.
“Making something you care about is difficult. Giving up on things I really don’t think is an option. It’s more a case of staying on the track, keeping it in your mind and coming back to it.”
This deep commitment, especially when an idea truly speaks to you, is what transforms a fleeting thought into a finished piece. It’s the invisible engine that drives me through challenges, creative blocks, and the sheer effort required to bring a vision to life.
The True "Filmmaking Talent"
The core message, for me, is simple yet profound: there isn’t a specific filmmaking talent. Instead, whoever it is that’s making something brings their own talents to the table.
My individual way of thinking, my approach to challenges, my unique blend of creativity and innovation, and my unwavering ability to persevere – these are my superpowers. They are the my "more to it" that elevates filmmaking beyond just a hobby or a technical skill.
